Chapter Five

ASHLYNN WOKE IN a strange room.

She pushed to a sitting position and took stock of her surroundings.

She was on a bed. One that looked a lot like the bed a baby dragon had burned earlier that day, though it didn’t feel quite the same.

A nightstand stood to her left, again much like the one she’d burned earlier, and a dresser and mirror stood on the wall opposite the bed.

That was where the similarities between her former room and this one ended, though.

From what she could tell, there wasn’t a kitchenette or sitting area in this particular room.

Huh.

She had no idea whose room she was in, but she wasn’t exactly happy about being relocated without her permission.

Not that the old room had been that great, all things considered. She blanched at the thought of all the damage she’d probably done to the room.

If her memories of the dragon’s flames and how they had drawn out her own were correct, the bed and the nightstand had been just the tip of the iceberg.

No use delaying the inevitable.

She should probably go down to the lobby and figure out how much this little fiasco was going to set her back.

She headed for the door, but stopped when she caught sight of her reflection in the mirror over the dresser.

Yikes.

She was still dressed in Zee’s oversized button-up shirt and nothing else. The shirt looked as if it might have originally been white, but it was now streaked gray and black.

She was covered in soot from head to toe.

Ashes in her hair, on her skin, on what she would bet was the last shirt she owned.

And it wasn’t even hers.

Ugh.

Storming past the mirror, Ashlynn almost cried in relief when she saw the bathroom door. Stepping inside, she stripped off the shirt, grabbed every sample bottle off the countertop, stepped into the shower and turned on the water.

She dumped the entire bottle of shampoo onto her head and began to scrub.

Fifteen minutes later, Ashlynn stepped out of the shower, feeling halfway human again.

She stood still for a moment, taking stock.

No sign of the phoenix. She seemed to be sleeping.

Good thing too, since Ashlynn definitely couldn’t afford any more of the damage the phoenix was known for.

She quickly dried off, then glared at the discarded shirt lying on the countertop.

She stepped into the outer room and did a search of the closet and drawers.

Nothing.

She huffed. Of course, it was too much to hope she would actually find clothes waiting for her.

Stamping over to the bed, she dragged the top sheet free and wrapped it around her body.

Taking a quick look in the mirror, she nodded.

At least she’d had plenty of practice at this sort of thing.

She couldn’t even begin to count the number of times she’d had to go shopping for clothes, wrapped in a sheet or a towel or on one memorable occasion, a rather sheer shower curtain.

With one last glance in the mirror to make sure everything was covered, she headed out the door.
